Hello Maria and Family, Dean was nice enough to let me spend the day with him on Thursday. I got to hang out as he went through his speech therapy which for now does not include speech. The therapist (Robin) has a laptop like PC with ICONS on it that Dean can press to form sentences. During this session Robin also attached small electrodes to Dean's neck area which sends mild impulses to his throat muscles in order to get them stimulated and ready to be used. Dean worked really hard and it was obviously not easy. But even during this one session I could see his improvement. I was extremely impressed with the care and concern of the staff that was working with Dean. It was obvious that his RN that day (Jean) was looking out for him and made a point of communicating with any new staff that might be working with Dean, exactly what his issues and needs were so that there would not be any room for error. Some of Dean's co-workers visited while I was there. They were really great and got Dean smiling. Later I accompanied Dean to get an X-Ray of his throat to determine how he is doing in regards to swallowing. The goal is to get his throat muscles to close off the trachia (spelling?) when he eats and drinks. This happens automatically for you and I, but for Dean it appeared that this was still a bit of a problem. The Physical Therapy folks hope to get him past this with more stimulation and some time. This would be huge because it would allow him to start taking nourishment by mouth which would go a long way towards getting Dean back to a more normal life. Later that day Dean challenged me to a game of Chess. Unfortunately I have never played chess before so I am afraid I was not much fun for him. Dean was kind enough to try to teach me, which is a bit of a challenge when he can't speak. When ever I made a stupid move, he would shake his head and move my game piece back. I think for my sake we should of started with Checkers. Anyway, I am sorry this is so long but I know Maria did not have a chance to blog on this day, so I thought I would pass along to everyone how things went during my short stay. Dean is working hard and I am told by his friends from work that he has made much headway. I have to commend Maria and Dean's work colleagues and everyone down there in LA for being so supportive of Dean. He is a fighter and obviously so is Maria. So just keep plugging away. There will be set backs but I know you can get past them. Signing off for now. Tim.
